TheAthens-HockingLandfillReclamationCenterhandlesanaverageof600to800tonsofmunicipalsolidwasteMSWandconstructionanddemolitionCDwasteadaydrawingfromcitiescountiesandprivateoperatorsthroughoutSoutheasternOhio.TheTerminator-shreddedmaterialcompactsbetterthanunshreddedmatterresultinginatotalvolumereductionofupto50percent.Sincetheearly1980sMSWandCDwastewereprocessedtheoldfashionedwayatAthens-HockingLandfillthetrashwasspreadoutbyadozerandrunoverbyacompactingmachinetocompactthematerialintothecell.Thecompactionprocesswasnotalwaysefficient.ThereweretimesthecompactorwouldrunovertrashbagsanditdidntevenbustthebagssaidTonyKilbargervicepresidentofKilbargerConstructionwhichownsthelandfill.Inearly2009thefacilitypurchasedaKomptechTerminator6000shredderfromColumbusEquipmentCompanyforpre-shreddingtheMSW.UsingawheelloadertoloadtheTerminatorthefacilitycanshredupto100tonsofMSWinanhoursaidsitesupervisorBillNye.ShreddingtheMSWreducesthevolumeofthematerialbyabout30percentNyesaid.OncethematerialhasbeenthroughtheTerminatoritisspreadoutinthecellandcompacted.TheTerminator-shreddedmaterialcompactsbetterthanunshreddedmatterresultinginatotalvolumereductionofupto50percentKilbargersaid.Wegetwaybettercom-pactionwiththeshreddedmaterial.Beforeyoucouldrunoveralayerofwasteinthecellandthecompactorwouldsinkdownintoit.Nowitlayslikedirtandyougetbettercompactionoutofit.The50percentvolumereductionmeansthatKilbargerConstructionisabletoplacetwiceasmuchMSWintoeachcellwiththeequivalentincreaseinrevenuefortheairspace.Additionallyitslowstheneedforopeninganewcellwhichrequiresasix-figureinvestmenttoexcavatetheholeputintherequiredlinersanddrainagelayersandgettherequiredpermits.Allthisequalsabetterbottomline.Whenthefacilitydoesaddanewcelloneoftherequirementsisthatthefirst5-footlayeroftrashputdowncannothaveanyitemsover2feetlongNyenoted.BeforewehadtopickthroughtrashbyhandAthens-HockingLandfillReclamatioKOMPTECHTERMINATOR6000RETonyKilbargerVicePresidentKilbargerConstructionKilbargerConstructionisabletoplacetwiceasmuchMSWintoeachcellwiththeequivalentincreaseinrevenuefortheairspace.
