Interest in intelligent Machine Control iMC continues to grow even among contractors who havent used any machine control before. KMU Trucking Excavating went from essentially no GPS straight to iMC and they are already seeing productivity gains of 20 to 25 percent. Owner Kevin Urig shares his experience with iMC dozers and the iMC learning curve for our readers. B. Jergens fleet. The company owns 12 of them. B Bill Jergens president of R. B. Jergens Contractors Inc. has seen hundreds of construction projects since entering the industry in 1972. But he remains enthusiastic about large- scale complex projects. His success however is linked to a non-wavering willingness to try new thingsincluding Komatsu construction equipment. That brand was practi- cally unknown in Ohio when Jergens purchased his first machine from Columbus Equipment Company in 1975. Yet forty years later the company recently took delivery of its 50th Komatsu excavatora PC490LC. According to Bill Jergens deciding to buy Komatsu excavators boils down to a few simple facts. Those excavators have the lowest hourly ownership coststhis includes initial purchase maintenance and fuel. We prefer Komatsu excavators over any other brand for these reasonsand theres more. While they are highly reliable technological advances over the years have kept Komatsu a leader he notes. Equipment Manager Jim Kurpiel piles on more praise Our Komatsu fleet includes everything from a basic PC35 up to a PC1100. We have great luck with Komatsu and generally dont even look at other excavators. Why Because Komatsu is on the forefront. We like Komatsus fuel economy and the machines are durable as a rock added Kurpiel. Proving this point our fleet still has a machine that we bought new in 1994. Jergens Contractors Inc. 7 The iMC Wave Rolls On KOMATSU INTRODUCES D65PXi-18 CRAWLER DOZER K Komatsu continues the rollout of its groundbreaking intelligent Machine Control iMC technology. The new D65PXi-18 crawler dozer features integrated machine control technology that allows the machine to perform automated dozing in all phases of a grading project from rough cut to finish grading. Early adopters of the technology have reported productivity gains of up to 50 percent in certain applications. In addition to knowing exactly where and how deep to grade the machine improves efficiency because it senses blade load minimizes track slip and ensures the operator gets the most out of every push noted Jason Anetsberger Komatsu product manager. We believe the difference in dozing efficiency between conventional machine operation and intelligent machine control technology is exceptional. Because the iMC system is fully integrated into the dozer the system does not require operators to hook up sensors antennas and cables at the start and end of the shift like an aftermarket system does. That alone saves up to 30 minutes of work time each day Komatsu estimates giving operators an additional half hour to move dirt. The D65PXi is a long-track low-ground-pressure machine that excels in soft or wet ground conditions. It also offers exceptional stability for finish grading applications. The dozer is powered by a 217-hp Tier 4 Final engine that cuts fuel consumption by up to 10 percent compared to previous models. The electronically- controlled transmission and lock-up torque converter select the optimal gear range increasing operating efficiency and eliminating loss of horsepower. Jason Anetsberger Product Manager Komatsu 9 M Meldrum Mechanical Services Inc. offers 247365 service to its customers often stepping into emergency large-scale industrial service or repair situations. The need to be on the move at short notice was the reason owner Brent Meldrum purchased a Link-Belt HTC-86100 truck-mounted crane from Columbus Equipment Company in late 2014. We use a crane to supplement our own work. We do a lot of emergency work and we like the convenience of getting where we need to be very quickly Meldrum said. With the truck crane a crew from Meldrum Mechanical can drive right to the job site and be ready to go instead of waiting to find a trucking company that can move a crane on short notice. In just a few months the Link-Belt has been used on a variety of projects from helping retrofit a roller coaster at Cedar Point to rebuilding a gyratory rock crusher. The crusher had a mantle that weighed more than 50000 pounds plus several other heavy bulky parts and Meldrum crews were able to remove them all through the roof thanks to the HTC-86100. The crane has also been used for bucket elevator jobs and even on another crane. Every day is different for us Meldrum said. The Toledo- based company offers customized millwright services repairs and installations and has a machine shop and fabrication shop. Reverse engineering and replicating pieces for outdated equipment is a specialty. One day the com- pany might be working on chutes or hoppers another day installing a safety catwalk. The company has been in business since 2001 and operates mostly around northwest Ohio. Meldrums father and uncle ran a similar business and he took over an established customer base when their business was dissolved. One Meldrum Mechanical customer all Ohioans are familiar with is the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky. In spring 2015 Meldrum crews and the 100-ton Link-Belt helped the park transform the former Mantis roller coaster into the new werewolf-themed Rougarou ride. The customer was able to visit the Link-Belt factory in Lexington where we went over the product thoroughly. Salesman Luke Matheson worked hard with the customer to make sure we provided all the information and com- parisons with competitors. Brent and his son Dustin went to great lengths as they considered the best purchase for them and we were pleased they made the decision to buy the Link-Belt. Before buying the HTC-86100 Meldrum owned a Link-Belt RTC-8050 rough terrain crane purchased from Columbus Equipment about three years ago. The rough terrain crane was able to go just about anywhere which was very useful because some of the locations we go to are not the best environments including very muddy areas Meldrum said. However he decided a bigger truck crane would allow the company to take on larger more diverse projects so he traded the 50-ton RTC for the new 100-ton Link-Belt. This was a big step for Meldrum as it was the largest new crane they had ever purchased. Their workload was such that they felt the need to step into a larger crane especially a truck crane Weber noted. This truck-mounted 100-ton crane is the largest you can run easily in Ohio Matheson added. Its the best bang for the buck for a truck crane. We enjoy working with Columbus Equipment and had very good support for the RTC Meldrum said. They are very responsive if we have any questions about crane operations. With the new crane under war- ranty we have utilized them a few times and they have been very supportive. With its focus on providing emergency repairs having good dealer support for its crane was a key consideration for Meldrum Mechanical. At one point the company owned a large truck crane made in Germany. Getting parts was difficult and there was no dealer support. By purchasing a Link-Belt we eliminated those problems Meldrum noted. Columbus Equipment has a long history of servicing cranes and any parts that are not in stock can be delivered from the factory in Kentucky in a day. Bob Weber Head of Lifting Division Columbus Equipment Company Link-Belt Pulse operating system 13 K KMU Trucking Excavating Inc. entered the dynamic new world of intelligent Machine Control as GPS dummies in the words of company president Kevin Urig. Essentially no one in the company had any experience with machine control systems when Urig started investigating the possibilities. Now the company is running two Komatsu iMC dozers and finishing grading projects faster than ever before with less manpower. Urig knows they havent finished the learning curve yet and he expects to use iMC more as the company learns to exploit all the advantages the machines offer. Urig began seriously considering the benefits of intelligent Machine Control at ConExpo when Komatsu displayed its iMC dozers. Later he tried the equipment at Komatsus proving grounds then used a demo from Columbus Equipment on some projects. He did his due diligence comparing several systems. Komatsus system is the only one that is fully integrated into the dozer and that was a big plus. I dont have to rip half the machine apart at the end of the day to put the system away or worry about branches catching wires and pulling something off the machine Urig said. He also found Komatsus system to be very user friendly. Columbus Equipment Company Machine Control Division Manager Mike Fenster and salesman Doug Dvorak have been very helpful in training operators how to use the system and most of the guys are adapting pretty quickly Urig noted. He estimates an operator using an iMC dozer can do any project in 20 to 25 per- cent less time than with a conventional machine and there is no need to have an extra worker to check the grade. So a parking lot that might take five days with a conventional dozer can be done in four. Even if it took you as long youre still eliminating a worker but it definitely does it quicker. The accuracy is huge too. You do the work once. The machine puts it right on the money the first time you go through there Urig said. Originally Urig purchased a Komatsu D61i dozer but he was so impressed by the performance that he leased a D51i dozer soon thereafter. Once I had the D61 I thought this is going to kill me. We are going to have to run this machine 247 to do everything I want to do with it Urig said. Customers benefit because jobs are being done faster and more accurately. KMU customers are seeing their projects being finished faster than ever before. The companys two iMC dozers pictured above make short work of a 15-acre 70000 sq. ft. Cabellas building pad parking and retention pond project on Chester Road just north of I-90 in Avon Ohio. 14 eventually result in lower prices for customers. Urig and his brother Keith started Avon-based KMU as moonlighters while working other jobs in the early 90s. They incorporated in 1998 and became Columbus Equipment customers soon after. Their first mini excavator a Kobelco broke down and they had to wait two months for parts so they turned to Columbus Equipment for a replacement rental. I realized right then that service and parts availability was so important Urig said. Today KMU owns about 20 pieces of Komatsu equipment and Urig still values the support he gets from Columbus Equipment. They stand behind their product. Whatever the Columbus Equipment guys have told me they would do they have stuck to that promise and followed through. KMU has about 100 employees including Kevin and Keiths brother Kenny who is their master mechanic and several other family members. The company has grown on repeat business and referrals due to their policy of treating customers as they would want to be treated. Their move from GPS dummies to increasingly knowledgeable iMC users proves their commitment to finding the most efficient way to complete a project and thats a win-win for all involved particularly KMU customers. While the recognition is nice Kevin Urigs greatest sense of accomplishment comes from the fact KMU started with a 2500 backhoe and has grown it into a business that now offers nearly 100 people in his community a quality place to work. That same creativity runs in the Urig DNA and is shared by Kevins brother Keith who has been working with Kevin since KMU started. Having grown up in the Duct Tape Capital of the World Avon OhioKeith channeled it to fabricate both a dozer and an excavator out of duct tape. The dozer had a moving blade and dry-ice to create smoke for the exhaust but unfortunately no iMC. 15 O HSM Services Inc. CHIPPING GRINDING AND G Officials at HSM Services Inc. have seen efficiency and production increase dramatically since they began using equipment recommended by Columbus Equipment Companys Environmental Division. We owe a lot of our success to the guys at Columbus Equipment and their equipment said Richard Moorhead owner. HSM which is based in Greenwood Mississippi entered the Ohio market about three years ago. HSM works mostly for the oil and gas industry clearing pipeline right-of-ways and doing erosion control and reclamation projects in Ohio Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The purpose-built CMI mulchers were game changers for us said Matt Monza general superintendent for HSM. The company had tried mulching machines before but most simply werent reliable. The CMI 450 made us rethink and change the way we clear land. Instead of grinding everything with a horizontal grinder crews can drive the CMI 450 and mulch as they go. It is so easy to get around has great driveability and is phe- nomenal on hills Monza said. Recently HSM also began using the smaller CMI 250 outfitted with a stump-grinding head. Crews previously grubbed stumps but the stump grinder has been much more efficient Monza said. The savings are substantial he explained. A hori- zontal grinder costs two times as much and burns 40 gallons of fuel an hour instead of seven gallons for the CMI. Plus with the grinder we needed two excavators and double the labor so we had three engines running instead of one. It is definitely more efficient to stump with the small stumper. The CMI 250 with stumper head is also small enough to fit into tight spaces and it does not require an oversize permit. Another game changer for HSM has been a Komatsu PC290 excavator equipped with a Rotobec 360 rotating grapple and saw package. This setup has a bucksaw that eliminates the need for a timberhand to cut the branches off felled trees and cut trees into 10-foot lengths. All our grapples were fixed and we had to spin everything on the ground relaying the brush to another machine to get the piles stacked neatly. With the Rotobec grapple we have 360-degree rotation Monza said. The operator can maneuver logs into the grinder easily even if they are not stacked in perfect alignment. That has increased efficiency by about 30 percent he noted. And because the operator has better control of what hes putting in the chipper damage to machinery has been reduced. HSM also depends on Morbark chippers and grinders from Columbus Equipment. The company owns a 4036 Track Drum Chipper that is so efficient it chips faster than we can clear Monza said. Before purchasing this chipper we had to have an operator on a chipper all day every day to keep up. The company has a Morbark 3800XL Wood Hog that is extremely reliable very efficient and produces a good product. HSM also rents equipment from Columbus Equipment. Land clearing jobs often come up at the last minute Monza said but Columbus Equipment has always come through. We can call the Environmental Division at 8 p.m. on a Friday and they have the equipment for us the next day. The service department is fast and efficient he added. Downtime is a major killer for us but if we go down Columbus Equipment gets us up right away. Columbus Equipment has been a great fit for us. Everyone is very professional. The company has purchased five new Peterbilt lube trucks and added two smaller four-wheel-drive Ford trucks to the fleet to better serve customers said Jason Lang PM Service Administrator. The Peterbilt truckswhich are outfitted with bigger lube tanks so PM technicians can service more customers per day without returning to the store for a refillare being added to the fleet over the summer. Lang who was a PM tech for seven years before taking the new administrative job designed the truck box layout for maximum efficiency. Hose reels toolboxes and other equipment have been placed so that everything is within easy reach when a technician gets to the jobsite saving time and cost to the customer. The four-wheel-drive Ford vehicles are being used in the southern branches where technicians often have to travel over rough terrain to reach a jobsite. The growth of our PM program really demanded larger more efficient trucks Lang said. With the addition of these trucks and the retirement of a few older lube trucks Columbus Equipment will have 12 lube trucks on the road. Each branch has at least one PM truck. More and more customers are recognizing the benefits of contracting with Columbus Equipment to handle their preventive maintenance. Customers like not having to keep track of hours and a maintenance fleet. They dont need to worry about buying and stocking filters or having all the oils needed on hand Lang said. Machines equipped with KOMTRAX make it even easier for owners because the KOMTRAX system alerts Columbus Equipment when a machine needs PM. Otherwise the customer can call to set up an appointment based on service hours on a machine. Komatsu CARE which provides free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 2000 hours of a machines life has also shown many customers how beneficial a PM program can be. Most preventative maintenance customers have the work done at night after they have shut down for the day. Theres no down time for the customer. Jason Lang PM Service Administrator Columbus Equipment Company 18 Simple Cab Filter Maintenance Schedule BOOSTS PRODUCTIVITY AND REDUCES RISK OF BREAKDOWN A A cab in which the air conditioning isnt functioning properly is a real productivity killer in the summer and its an all-too-common occurrence. At this time of the year the most common jobs I see are related to air condi- tioning said Darrell Drone a senior field technician with Columbus Equipment Company. Guys get hot in the cab and they are miserable. Naturally productivity will suffer. In most cases however simply taking care of the cab filter can prevent air conditioning and heating issues in your equipment. Drone recommends checking cab filters every week and cleaning out any dust or dirt that has accumulated. He uses compressed air to blow the dust out but simply shaking or tapping the filter can also dislodge dirt so that more air can move through it. A clogged filter prevents air from moving to or from the heater box. It cant get air in or air out Drone said. Without proper air movement the core can get clogged and parts can get damaged. The result is unhappy opera- tors with no heat or air conditioning in the cab not to mention costly repairs to the air conditioning unit. Filters do need to be replaced regularly. The owners manual will list a recommended service interval or you can follow Columbus Equipments policy of replacing the cab filter during every oil change. We think it is a good practice because that way we know the filter is fresh and the quality of the air in the cab is better said Drone who has been with Columbus Equipment Company for 17 years. The three young technicians will spend a year in the program alternating time in the classroom with time in the field where they will work alongside a senior technician mentor. The program has been very successful noted Mike Montgomery company trainer. Historically a student just out of tech school starts as a trainee and it takes him six to eight years to be ready to have a service truck on his own. Technicians going through our intern program get a service truck in two yearsone year in the program and a year in the shop and they are ready for a truck. All three members of the current class of interns attended the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima.
