His company, Bontrager Excavating Ltd., has been running a dozer equipped with a Trimble system since 2008. The increased accuracy and productivity that the system provides piqued his interest in Komatsu’s intelligent Machine Control (iMC) excavators. But he wasn’t ready to make the leap to iMC until he had his questions answered. Bontrager attended an iMC Experience Event, a daylong program hosted by Columbus Equipment Company, to get more information on the speed of the machine and the hydraulic assist. Attendees got to check out Komatsu PC360i and PC490i excavators. “I was able to get on the machine and see what it would do. I liked the speed, the hydraulic assist didn’t slow things down at all,” he said. “I also wondered how accurate it was, and how it would add value to our specific operation— how I could integrate it into the projects we face.” Uniontown-based Bontrager Excavating does commercial and residential subdivision sitework and also works for homebuilders, doing everything from digging basements to backfilling foundations and finish grading. “The biggest thing for me is cutting out labor,” he commented. “Finding good people is so difficult any- more. If there is a way to automate things and not have to have grade checkers, that really helps.” A two-day demo of a PC360i answered those questions. “It sped up production and I got more out of a four-man crew because I didn’t always have to have a guy in the ditch checking grade.” The project, a waterline, wasn’t particularly technical, but Bontrager was happy with the excavator’s accuracy. Also, his operator, who had never used a GPS system before, picked up the basics in about an hour. iMC Experience Event Allows BONTRAGER EXCAVATING LTD.
