3 Kubota’s new 3-ton-class compact excavator has many of the features found in the company’s larger class machines, including a larger cab. The KX033-4, a conventional tail-swing model with a Tier 4 Final 24.8-hp Kubota engine, replaces the KX91-3. Standard features include a diverter valve on the dipper stick that allows two attachments, such as a thumb and a hammer, to be hooked up at the same time. “After an operator is done with a breaker, for example, he can take a wrench and turn the valve so he can use the thumb,” said Jeff Jacobsmeyer, Kubota product manager. The adjustable hydraulics on this machine allow as many as five, different oil flow rates to be programmed via a digital panel. The operator can also set the machine to automatically idle engine rpms when the controls are in neutral for more than four seconds, resulting in less noise and better fuel efficiency. Kubota offers an optional angle blade on this machine. “Many people opt to use an angle blade because it makes it a lot easier to backfill,” Jacobsmeyer said. “And with the reversible cutting edge [which Kubota also uses on the standard straight blade], you just unscrew eight bolts, flip it over, and you have another wear surface in about 20 minutes.” For ease of maintenance, the primary engine components are grouped on one side. The fully opening rear and right-side hoods make it easy to inspect and reach maintenance points. Operator comfort items include a wider cab entrance, more foot room, an upgraded suspension seat, and improved air conditioning.
